Girl Scout Cookie Program
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is America’s leading Business and Economic Literacy Program for girls! Girl Scouts and cookies share a rich history. While recipes (click here for the original cookie recipe) and box designs have changed, the Girl Scout Cookie Program still remains an important part of today’s Girl Scout program. In fact, many successful businesswomen today say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies. Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls set goals, manage inventory, learn money management, and develop marketing skills. Essentially, the girls run their own business! • Girl Scout Cookie Program activities give girls the Courage to approach people by working at her troop’s booth sale or going door-to-door with other girls from her troop. Whether a girl is dreaming of becoming a doctor, teacher, businesswoman, superstar athlete or president of the United States, the Girl Scout Cookie Program gives them the self-esteem they need to reach their goals. Making It Count All of the proceeds - every penny – after paying the baker remains in the area where the cookies are sold and directly or indirectly, benefits Girl Scouts in our local communities. Individual troops retain a portion of their proceeds and prior to the sale, girls vote on how they might spend the money they will earn and then set goals and strategies to reach those goals. Activities funded by troop proceeds might include special trips to a museum or the zoo, an overnight stay at camp and community service projects. The remaining proceeds are used for many purposes, including the cost of recognitions, maintaining council program/camp properties and providing financial assistance for girls; providing leadership development for adult volunteers; and program initiatives, events and activities. Baking The Best The national Girl Scout organization, Girl Scouts of the USA, approves and currently licenses two bakers: ABC/Interbake Foods and Little Brownie Bakers. At the bakeries, the cookies are produced by American labor union members from American-grown agricultural products and wrapped in American-made packaging materials. Currently Girl Scouts of Shagbark Council is working directly with Little Brownie Bakers to supply cookies.
